Keto Meat / LCHF Diet

When you are eating a ketogenic diet or low carb high-fat diet, it can be hard to track down meat to hit your Macro targets. Often you search for thicker layers of fat for fuel, only to find it has been trimmed off at mainstream supermarkets and butchers.

On the ketogenic diet, you use fat as a fuel source, rather than glucose so your body can run on ketones and burn fat as an energy source. While many people choose to go on a keto diet for weight loss, there is a range of benefits from like improved cognitive function, stable moods, reduced allergies & inflammation and so the list goes on.

Here at Halswell butchery, we are by no means keto experts, but if you tell us what you need, we are happy to cut it to your specifications.

Though everyone is different, the standard ratio of macronutrients for a ketogenic diet is 75 per cent fat, 20 per cent protein, and five per cent carbohydrate. This means only about one-fifth of your meal should be a protein which is why you should keep the skin on chicken and reach for fattier cuts. Here is a great article and pictures of protein from the Diet Doctor Website.

Here are some of the meats with the best fat-to-protein ratio. But keep in mind: Even these high-fat meats have plenty of protein, so they shouldn’t be eaten at every meal.

  • We can grind you a fattier cut of mince 
  • Sell you sheets of pork skin or chicken skins to make crackling.
  • Pork belly
  • Fatty cuts of steak (NY strip, ribeye, brisket, scotch fillet)
  • Bacon
  • Chicken Thigh or Drumsticks with the skin on.
  • Skin-on fatty fish, such as salmon
  • Offal (organ meats such as liver, cheek, and heart)
